Building a Superhero: Science Outreach on Human Diversity

Humans occupy very different environments and, as a result, demonstrate an array of spectacular diversity in terms of adaptations to these environments. This diversity is not always well understood, nor appreciated. I will create a “Build Your Own Superhero” game which allows students to place adaptations on a blank Superhero card based on their chosen environment card. This challenges students to critically consider why some features may be beneficial in certain environments, but detrimental in other environments. This game also promotes positive consideration of human diversity--everyone is a superhero! While I foresee many future outreach events with this game, I will present it to a rural after-school program in Massena, IA for the purposes of this project.
