The Opiod Epidemic: What it is and How to Combat it
My individual project will be to host an informational session about the opioid crisis for pre-health students at the University of Iowa. This epidemic is increasing in severity rapidly, prompting the belief that it will be the greatest public health crisis in the United States for the foreseeable future. It is my belief that as future healthcare professionals we should be aware of the implications and stigma of opioid addiction and how it will affect our practice of medicine. My major partner for this project will be the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition (IHRC). I will also have contacts with University of Iowa physicians on the front lines of the opioid crisis, along with researchers at the University involved in opioid-related research and addiction treatment development. The overarching goal of the presentation is to provide a basic knowledge of the greatest challenge facing modern medicine to future healthcare providers.
