Upward Bound: A Case for Students in STEM Research

Diversity in demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) serves as a concern for the progress of the fields themselves; this is further prevalent in STEM research. Programs that help first-generation and low-income (FLi) high school students such as Upward Bound (UB) aim to prepare students for postsecondary education by university collaborations and outreach events. Collaborating with programs such as UB can be an effective approach to give students opportunities to observe and experience various aspects of STEM research. Together with our peers, our outreach project aims to help UB students get a grasp on STEM research, the opportunities offered at the University of Iowa and possibly other academic institutions, and increase awareness of research opportunities at their disposal upon enrolling in postsecondary education.
